Why soffit and fascia are important

It’s that time of year again – Fall – and that means a lot of rain. As your home gets ready to head into Winter, your roof’s health is very important. The soffit and fascia are two of the most overlooked parts of your roof but they are very important.

What is soffit? Soffit is the exposed siding underneath your roof’s overhang. Since your soffit is located on the underside of your roof, it’s often not visible in terms of curb appeal. However, your soffit can still be seen when you’re close to the home and when you’re underneath it or at street level. Your soffit is usually the same design and color as your home’s siding, but can be different depending on your own personal tastes and preferences and it can be made from wood, aluminum or vinyl. It’s important that you have soffit material suitable for the climate you live in. Here in Florida, vinyl siding is ideal and comes in many different colors and designs.

What is fascia? The fascia goes hand-in-hand with your home’s soffit. Fascia is the area of siding directly above the soffit. It’s the exposed board you see on the front of your roof’s overhang. Your fascia is also where rain gutters are placed. Fascia is very visible and needs to be in good shape so your home’s curb appeal isn’t in jeopardy. Just like your soffit, your fascia can be made of aluminum, wood or vinyl.

Why Is your soffit important? Your soffit is important because it has venting that helps keep a steady airflow between your roof and attic. Your attic needs to be well ventilated or else moisture can build up, causing mold to form. The last thing you want in your home is mold. Aside from keeping moisture out, soffit helps release heat from your attic during the hot Florida summer months.

Your soffit also helps keep animals and insects out of your home. Bees and wasps love to nestle up in soffit, so you need to keep it maintained to prevent them from invading. It’s important to make sure that your soffit has no cracks or holes in it and if it does, you should repair or replace it right away.

And why is your fascia important?
Your fascia consists of the long straight board along the lower edge of the roof, so how can it be so important? It’s the last line of support for the lower edge of the bottom row of roof tiles, shingles or metal roof. Fascia is also important because it’s visible to everyone! If you want to maximize your home’s curb appeal, your fascia needs to look great as well.

The 4-1-1 on Soffit and Fascia

You know that the roof of your home protects the structure itself and the contents inside from the elements. While pretty much everyone knows what shingles are, there’s more to roofing than that. Today’s blog discusses soffit and fascia – what they are and why they are important.

Soffit and fascia keep water and debris out of your home. In addition, they give your roof a finished look and are an important piece of your roofing system.

Soffit is the exposed surface beneath the overhanging section of a roof eave. The term can also refer to the horizontal underside of similar architectural structures, such as porches or archways. Soffit protects the area underneath a roof’s overhang from the weather. A vented soffit lets air circulate in an attic. This helps to keep the roof cool by moving air up through the attic and out of the ridge vent. Soffit is typically made from vinyl and is designed with small holes that provide air circulation. Proper air ventilation will also save you energy, as it helps regulate the temperature in your attic and throughout the rest of the home.

Fascia covers the front of the soffit. This gives the roof’s edge a finished look and increases your curb appeal. Fascia boards are typically wood, but they can be made from vinyl, aluminum or plastic. The primary function of the fascia is to help the soffit protect the roof and the interior of the home from moisture by blocking its entrance. Moisture can ruin fascia boards that run along the roof line. The main causes of moisture build up behind the fascia board are clogged gutters or improper shingle overhang. It is important to repair or replace any fascia board that shows any sign of damage to ensure that it is properly protecting your home from the weather.
